Bah will the windows at least stay if I reformat it?
If it's originally Windows, yes.

But will everything else be gone like all the programs installed after buying the computer?

And if I move them to an external hard drive to keep them will they just end up reinfecting the newly reformatted computer?

Yeah, everything installed except for what comes on it originally will be wiped.
And it depends.  If whatever you have has infected all the programs, then yes.  Though, I've not had a virus do that to me, so I don't know what to tell you in that case..
If I wipe, I have a disc with all the stuff I install (except for my Photoshop, I need make a disc for that) and reinstall it all, and it's fine.

Guess I'll see if I can get a hold on/of an external hard drive that is big enough.  =<
Good bye vocaloids and RO in the worse case scenario... /desp

The hell do you mean by "memory leak?"

The hell do you mean by "memory leak?"

It means after I open a program and use it when I close it I don't get the ram back. It's like the program is still open and killing that ram not to mention the longer the computer is on the more ram gets eaten like it's being used for something but no program is actually using it.

I was told this is called a memory leak. /shrug

Hmm.  Some programs don't completely close when you only close the window.  Try checking them in the Task Manager.

Dunno if this'll help:

That's the only memory leak I've ever heard of (they crop up often in programming languages where pointers are used, if the programmer doesn't pay attention to his pointers), but as far as I know the problem always exists with the program itself or else in your Operating System.  As far as I know there's no other way to fix it, so if it's a bug in the program itself you would need to contact the manufacturer.

How does a flood ruin a CD ???

I check the task manager and nuke them if they don't close all the way I have so little ram I have to...

CD was in boxes said boxes got submerged in 5+ feet of water heavy things on top of the box with the cds in them breaks apart along with the box with the computer stuff in it and wala the disks ended up scratched to heck or broken from something landing on them wrong. Plus the few that might have been ok got thrown out anyways because mom didn't like the smell they had or something stupid.. =.=

>_>

I hate CDs, they're such a poor way of storing data.

There are some programs for freeing up RAM (I'm not sure if they work very well though, I've seen websites that call them good and websites that call them bad), and rebooting your computer will of course clear everything out (though if you open those programs, they will begin to hog memory again).  Usually Windows takes care of those things, unless you don't close the program.

You could also try a RAM upgrade - installing more RAM isn't too hard, so long as you read the directions, and an extra gig or two can make a big difference in performance.  RAM is to a computer's operation what lube is too sex.

I'd love a ran upgrade in fact it's sitting in it's antistatic container collecting dust....
My computer is so old it couldn't hold the upgrades... 2gb of ram instead of 512mb or whatever this trasher has going to waste.

I also noticed this is in Media, and it is more of a tech-support type question, so I will now move it somewhere more appropriate...
