How do you guys choose who is a GM?
« on: January 15, 2009, 06:36:36 am »
Yeah, This is just making me all curious.

Just to clarify, I am not asking to be a GM. So don't ban me or anything. I wouldn't want the job anyway, having people scream at you about support tickets and lost items isn't my kind of thing. Although the thought of spawning a bazillion Ifrit and Valkyrie Randragis in Prontera seems fun... /gg

Anyway...

Here is my question. How do Talis and the rest of you GMs choose who can be a GM and who cannot?

Is it in terms of RO experience? Are all you guys friends in real life? Do you have to pass a long written test?

I've messed around on a few servers where the GMs were very childish and some of them were very young, as well. Of one server, the owner was just 15.

I see GMs come and go, sometimes I notice a new GM added who wasn't there before and then disappear shortly after a few weeks/months.

So yeah, that's my question.

Here, it's done on a basis of applications and such.  It seems as though it is a long process of screening and such.  The last GM recruitment was done in August, and here is a link to that topic posted by Denia.

http://www.anthemro.com/forums/index.php/topic,36872.0.html

This should give you an idea of how it's done.

Yeah, but we have a couple of new GMs here (one of whom we've never even heard of, though of course it's conceivable it's just a well known player who doesn't want their former identity known) - that thing in August did happen, yes, but no doubt there are other ways they choose GMs too.  Like the OP, I'm curious - what are those ways?

I'm sure that when the August thing came about, atleast 100 people sent in their applications.  They were narrowed to eventually X ammount.  I'm sure there were other very good candidates.

I'm not sure of Fidelis and Tesla, but it seems they came out of those apps, and they are doing a helluva job as is, even though sometimes we may not notice.  Tesla is now a high GM and Fidelis is kicking butt with those support tickets /gg

What do you mean "OP"?

Original Poster?

Ah, I didn't realize Fidelis and Tesla were that recent.  Guess I wasn't paying as much attention to that sort of thing back then  ::)

First time I hear of Original Poster.

And I'm not 100% of Fidelis and Tesla, but I *think*.  (Didn't see them before, unless they were really behind the scenes.)

No longer a GM, but:

  • Other than Customer Service type qualifications (professional, manners, and such)
  • Ability to communicate clearly & efficiently
  • Common sense, good sense of judgement
  • Adept with computers and/or some sort of technical skill and understanding of "why would the client do X, or why would it do Y"
  • Patience
  • Ability to act with discretion when handling confidential matters
  • And of course, the ability to not be biased in all situations, and follow the rules "to a T"
  • Be able to take constructive criticism and grow from it

Pluses:

  • Ability to read and write in another language
  • Ability to script
  • Fast learner
  • Average to slightly above average understanding of game mechanics

As for RL friends, no, we were not all RL friends prior to Anima/Anthem. However, during Anthem relationships were formed after we became GMs. I knew who Talis was in game prior, however I was never a "friend" I would say. Same goes for Adrift and the rest of them. I have however, met Talis IRL. I haven't met Adrift yet but I've called him. Kairiya has texted me. I want to visit Adrift some time, when time permits it.

Some of the GMs were nominated by other GMs. Then the rest would investigate to see if this player seemed to perhaps be close to something that would fit the bill. Once several GMs OK'd the new GM in question, then they got approached. (See: Kairyia)

The other GMs and PRs were selected from the hiring that we had. I had them write out a resume with full cover letter. I then selected the ones that followed all directions to a T. Then I posted the resumes along with cover letter to the other GMs and let them go through it and we nominated and discussed the ones that were left over from the first phase.

Shortly there after, some references were contacted to verify. Then upon finishing that, I interviewed the ones left over. Presented to the GM team one last time, then contacted the players.

No longer high GMing. Please do not message me about your recovery. Don't give away the keys to your car and you won't have it stolen and have to go to the police to try and get it back.

And that's why I love this server so much. The server is run very professionally. I know people like to bitch about a lot of stuff, I sometimes do it as well, but really all the GM work is appreciated a lot. Sometimes I tend to forget the amount of work the GM's have to do, and now I feel like saying thanks for a change. Thank you GM's for all your hard work!

Nobody is perfect, GMs here or anywhere else - nor we players, for that matter.  But yes, the GMs do a very good job. Thank you!

Many applied, few were chosen, that is all.

The real truth is that Talis rolled up a bunch of character sheets ala D&D, and whenever he sees a player in game or on the forums whose name happens to match the randomized characters, they get hired. It's a very... "let Fate take its course" kinda approach to hiring. I find it rather refreshing and unique. /ok

No longer a GM, but:

[...]

If you're no longer a GM, how come you still take on GM responsibilities, such as posting in the News & Updates section of the forums?

Are you really Talis undercover as Denia and are trying to make it seem like its a female?  (Because you two have a very similar writting style by the way.)
