is this legal?
« on: January 13, 2009, 01:16:58 am »
i have a question about voting. I just joined ro, and as my bro is alreay playing,he's letting me use 1 of his accounts. But i hv read that 2 people from the same household cannot vote from the same ip, so is it ok for me to vote from my workplace but play ro from the same computer as my bros?

As long as it's not the same Internet IP then it is fine meaning that your Work Internet is in no way connected to the Internet in your brother's computer...

if you vote at work and play at home, isn't that illegal?

I was under the impression that if you're caught voting from multiple computers for the same playing IP it's against the rules.

otherwise wouldn't everyone vote at work, school, home, the library, and their friend's house, and then get 5x the free ads all transferred to the same account?

Not at all.  However, it's discouraged to vote from elsewhere since for all you know someone else at your place of work/school/library might be voting as well, and if that were the case you'd get in trouble for that.  But there's no rule against voting at other places (I specifically asked) - it's just not recommended.  This is why it would be legal for a friend of yours who doesn't play RO to create an account, vote daily, and give you the ad credits.  In fact, in theory you could do that yourself (once again not recommended, but if you do it right there's no way for them to prove it's you and not a friend of yours who doesn't play and is giving you the ads to be nice) Disclaimer:  I do not recommend any of this, nor do I do it myself.

But there is definitely no rule against voting elsewhere from where you play, it's just that you'd better hope nobody else there plays this server and votes from that location, or else you could get banned just the same.

I would say your best bet is to only vote at home. You can vote at school since it is you and your brother who plays. However, the issue arises when you log into your forum account at home. Then it is seen as ad fraud to us. So I would suggest against actually voting, and only have 1 person in your household vote. I hope that clears things up.
No longer high GMing. Please do not message me about your recovery. Don't give away the keys to your car and you won't have it stolen and have to go to the police to try and get it back.

Errr... what?  Maybe I'm a bit slow, but your whole post I sort of didn't understand, and especially that bit.

Basically, Denia is saying that there is no way for the staff to distinguish between two legitimate individuals (each with their own account) using the forums from home, but one voting at home and one voting at work/school, verses one individual (with two accounts) using the forums from home (pretending to be two different people), and voting with one account at home and the other at work.

This is why she said she'd suggest only having 1 person vote per household, regardless of whether each person might have alternate locations he/she would be able to vote from.

Does that help clear things up?  :)

The moral of this story is for one brother become the designated voter at home, to not complicate things for everyone involved.

The other brother should not vote at all, unless the designated voter forgets to vote.
