i think they only work if the suspected character is online.

it'll probably go something like:

"[character name here], stop what you're doing immediately and respond to my questions" or something like that. and if the person fails to respond, then they are more than likely a bot. at least, that's how I would do a bot-check...

oh, and i'm assuming you're asking how a GM might do a bot check...

Some cases I believe they bring the suspected Char to a different Map and see how it reacts...

Most sane person would "WTF" bots would ignore it

Or make your char fight a Uber monster that a normal player would run away from...

If the staff told everyone exactly how they worked, then botters would be able to try working around that. That wouldn't be particularly smart for the GMs to do, now would it?

You know this almost makes me wonder if I've been bot checked before. I was standing in Hugel once then all of a sudden I was in the middle of niff and it was totally empty and no one was around player or monster even though I had just been there and it was full. I got kinda freaked out about it can't remember weather I warped to town then logged or just logged out but I was back in Hugel when I logged in again even though my home point is Lutie... Could have just been a really bad error though.

so any downloaded bot program would not work on anthem?? Meaning I can trust my brother with my gears again?

I wouldn't just cause they can't bot and get banned doesn't mean they can't scam and get banned that or lend out your gear and forget to get it back.
