I would like to make a suggestion to a person starting a thief class:

First get around 20-30 dex when you start out being thief i.e. level 35 base job and job level 1 thief.

then work on your agi and str afterwards. The best thing is to kill low level monsters for job exp until you get lvl 10 double attack and perfect dodge.

Second start selling loot and get money for MEAT not gears MEAT. That way you can kill the tougher stuff to level faster by spamming the healing items. Once you reached job 40 thats when you should start getting money to get better gears. you know like manteau chainmail etc, etc.

Thing is, you don't need to be told around by other people, it's pointless.
If you find a thing that's suitable for you, stick with it.
Personally, as a level 30 thief, the first thing I'd do is get at least 20 dex to 30 dex,
20 to 30 str and the rest to agi up till 50.
So, first thing I would do is, get a decent amount of dex (20 or so does suffice), then
str (I find 30 to be advisable) and then go for agi, which should make you dodge more
often.
I'd either try Poison spores (geffen tower) or metallings (einbroch, down, right, right, up)
up till job level 30.
After that then, go and play in Toy Factory I guess.

Anyway, that's what -I- would do in your case.

i recomend 40 since all u need to do is go south of einbroch with meat and kill stuff there then go theif then get perfect dodge and double attack then hit leaf cats =3

u'd want equilibrium i guess...
the maximum dmg u hit per second...
its like a combination of aspd vs dmg.
if u have say..99agi but 1str, even if u get like...1-2aspd more than at 80agi and 30+str, the str will give u over 30dmg per hit..so it would be worth sacrificing some agility.

str vs agility, it would depend on what gears and where u train(flee)

The main trick with a good thief build is the balance between AGI and STR. Not enough STR and your damage sucks; not enough AGI and you get killed too fast.
Check a website like RMS for the flee number needed for the monster. Mi gao's are good exp as well, but hard to kill without a fire weapon or high flee.

Sorry, but if you ask for help and people take time to give a lengthy answer you'd do well to read it all /ok
My main is a stalker and if there's one class I know most about it's probably the thief class... xD
I dare say I know quite a bit about low level leveling actually...

In any case, your stats will vary per location you train at. I managed to efficiently level at golems when I was a level 40 thief with just a damascus and some pretty crappy other gear (I'm talking hood, sandals, hat, guard crappy)

try 20 dex and equal amounts of agi and str.. until the monster you're trying to fight doesn't hit you as often.. then just start adding more to str.. then when the exp with that dungeon gets shitty.. go to a stronger one.. start adding more agi til the monsters there hardly hit you.. then add str.. repeat......... for eternity ;~;

i need more dex than that for steal... and im more interested in not getting hit rather than how long it takes to kill something so i rebuilt mostly for agi then dex

Do you mean you balance STR, AGI, DEX, LUK, INT, VIT all equally on your characters??
That will give you a hard time /ok

Stick with 2 maybe 3 stats as a first class
