how do you get a pet

Well, you buy the Tame, from the NPC in Prontera (To the right of the fountain) Or Farm it from a Monster.
It'll tell you which monster the Tame is for usually.

Then you go out, and use the Tame on the monster.
Its rumoured that Weakening it a little will make it easier to catch. However I still think that
Sounds too much like Pokemon to be real.

Through experience, I have found it easier to catch pets by lowering their hp easier.

Then again, I could just be really unlucky...

I also believe this to be true. Back when I started me and a wiz friend used to go on pet catching runs he would keep on using "instert skill name which works like identify but for monsters here" and I would get it down to as low as possible before we try to "capture" it. I found it worked very well.

Semi-off-topic: While we're talking about pets, does pet armor do anything after you give it to the pet? Wasn't sure if it provides some sort of functionality

i dont think it dose and the pets are jus for show and fun anyway so the armor should be also

As of this episode, pets can do nothing. They can't fight, use magic, heal you, or pick up your loot (I loved my poporing for that :< )
