Your cover letter should pretty much summarize you and why they should select you, kind of like your resume. Here is an example cover letter that I had done previously. (Important information pertaining to me taken out X3 ) It wasn't that great now that I look back on it, but it blew the HR director and IT director away X3, oh and I sent this in an email so I didn't really feel the need to put date or anything like that.

Dear Human Resources Manager:
I am amidst relocating from ____________ to ________ and will be transferring to Eastern Washington University, where I am
looking to complete my Bachelors Degree in Computer Information
Systems. I read on your website that there was an opening for Help
Desk Operator on the ______________ website. The qualities you
need are a close match to the ones I've developed. I have two years
of experience with computer systems, and I'm sure my skills might be
useful to you right away.
I know that a successful PC support technician has to take care of
customers in a way that is helpful and efficient. These are
characteristics that I've developed in my prior jobs. In my past
positions I was required to deal with the computing needs and
technical support of the companies I worked for. I am very
experienced at working with computer hardware and am able to trouble
shoot problems by creating solutions that not only solve the problem
but prevents future problems from occurring.
I am confident my knowledge and abilities will be of value to ____________.
I would like a few minutes of your time to discuss my
qualifications. Please forward my resume to the hiring manager for
consideration. If you have any questions in the meantime, please call
or email.
Best regards,
Denia
