I don't make the entire OS, I make a kernel that people/companies take and use as the base of an operating system. So unlike Microsoft, there is no one company that owns Linux, that's why there are so many distributions. Anyone can take some code, edit it, and repackage it. It encourages creativity and results in some amazing projects. That's the benefit of open source
It's an ongoing project, and labor of love, but it's going good. Ubuntu seems to have really taken off lately, even making a mobileOS! Keep an eye out, it will soon be in the same ring as iOS and Android (nobody cares about Windows Phone).
