Does anyone know who to change the priority RO boots in?
« on: March 27, 2011, 02:26:46 am »
It always boots as a low priority and I lag really badly sometimes because I don't always remember to ctrl alt delete it into a normal priority. Could I perhaps edit a registry entry to get it to naturally boot in normal from now on?

Hmm weird. They shouldn't start with low priority by default, rather "normal" priority or so.

That one might help, found it via google on a forum:
Quote
Another nifty trick is to add "Run at high priority" command to Explorer context menu:
Open regedit, go to "HKCR\exefile\Shell\". Create a new subkey called "runhigh" (or whatever). Set the default value to "Run at high priority".
Under your new key create another called "command". Set the default value to 'C:\WINDOWS\System32\cmd.exe /c start "runhigh" /high "%1"' (note the name of the key you created before, the path to cmd.exe is probably different on your system).

HKCR = HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT

Which operating system are you using? I.e. Windows XP 32bit, or Windows 7 64bit, etc.?
Also, did you reboot after adding that to the registry?

Or, different question: which one didn't work? Adding the "Run at high priority" command to your explorer context menu, or getting RO to run at high priority?

EDIT: I see, it adds the command, but RO is still low priority... hmm.

Hmm, it's the same for me, but I noticed that, when I change the priority to something else, like Normal, High or Realtime, and I switch back to RO, and then back to the Task Manager, it's again on Low. I think that Windows automatically changes its priority to Low when it runs in the background.

Try playing in fullscreen? :S You usually get a better performance by doing that.

Other than that, here's another thing I found: http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html

Ah so it's windows being an ass?

Well I'll try the link or just try and remember to switch it off low from now on.

Hmm, no, it seems to be the Ragnarok client only. When I start Runes of Magic in window mode, it is set to "Normal", when I change it to "Realtime" for example, it stays when I repeatedly switch out to Windows and back to the Runes of Magic client, however, when I do it with the RO client, it gets always set to "Low", no matter what I switch the priority to, as I already said.

EDIT: The tool from http://www.prnwatch.com/prio.html doesn't do anything either. So I guess you have to change it manually each time if it helps. :( There are other people with the same problem out there (for different games), but with no solution either.

Just curious, are you using dinput.dll/.ini or not? Aka Mouse Freedom. One of it's command toggles is:
Code: [Select]
; Release CPU when RO window is inactive.
; Disable Ctrl+S hotkey as this is automatic way to do the same.
; Command line switch: -cpu
AutoFreeCPU = 1
This makes it so when the window is in the background, it goes down to a much lower framerate/priority? to save CPU processing.

Probably not but... I'm to lazy to do anything that messes with the CPU.

Depending on which install you're using, it came with previous full installers but was forgotten in the most recent. The files would simply be in your RO folder, you can open up the dinput.ini to see/change which command toggles it allows. It also allows you to run RO in a custom sized window or fullscreen windowed without borders, many nice features.
