I keep getting that error whenever I try to start up aRO. What should I do to fix this problem?

Go to your RO directory, and double click on the Setup.exe.
Then choose a resolution and a Direct3D driver. (Are you able to choose one or do you just see ... nothing?)

Or you should check your video card drivers & directX. To do so, press Start -> Run... -> Type in "dxdiag", then go to the "Display" tab. DirectDraw and Direct3D acceleration should be "enabled".

Believe it or not, go into setup and disable sound, and see if that helps.

Hmm.. I believe you need to install video card drivers. Can you play other games? Or did you just format your hard drive and re-installed Windows?

Do you know the name of your video card?

EDIT: Oh and, what does the dxdiag window tell you about the name of your video card? Right above the buttons (in the display tab), there should be something like a "name" or "manufacturer".

I can't play any other downloadable games. I didn't format my hard drive because I forgot how to. >.<

Here is the info on my video card

Main Driver:vga.dll
Version:5.01.2600.0000
Date:10/10/2006 14:00:00
WHQL logo'd: Yes
Mini VDD:vga.sys
VDD:n/a
DDI Version:unknown

Edit: I also tried the sound thing and it didn't work.

Disabling sound in the setup menu didn't help? I know that solved this problem in the past. It seemed weird to me since it's a graphical fault, but eh. You may want to see about getting a video card, cause that's an onboard one, and bad at that.

Main Driver:vga.dll
Okay, this means, you need video card drivers @.@

Do you have a NVidia video card? Go look here for a driver: http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us
ATI video card? http://www.ati.com, then Support & Drivers.

Oh well, I'm sorry that I can't really help you, but without the name of your video card, there's pretty much nothing I can do..
Well, usually when you get/buy the computer, there are driver CDs with it. So you should look if you are able to find them.

vga.dll means: Windows uses its "worst" driver, just to be able to print something on the screen. VGA usually (or all the time) means: No driver installed.

EDIT: Just for clarification. It's not a problem about getting RO to work, but a problem about your computer and your video card. But WHEN you got the video card driver once, you'll most likely be able to play RO without any errors.

I figured it was because of a lck of video card, and it was a very badly made integrated one.

Ya. Usually after re-installing Windows, it uses the VGA driver, no matter if the Video card is good or bad or integrated, until you install the specific drivers for your video card.

Are you able to tell us the specs of you computer?

Also, have you EVER run any 3D games? Your card may not be compatible.

The first question is: what is your hardware?
the second is: specifically, what is your GFX card?

Open start menu
Then select: run
Type in dxdiag
and press enter.
you'll see a new window, on the tabs on the upper part of the window select display.
Then take a screenshot of the window and post it here
