Help please - Problems creating a character!

Just downloaded and installed everything i need, but when i go to 'Make' a character and start the game it either gives the error message that the name is already taken/illegal characters (even with random letters) or just disconnects from the server, I've been trying this on and off all day with no luck =(
Any ideas if there's anything else i can do?

Select another slot. It shows 9, but only 5 of them are available. And also, when in doubt and you're having an issue, chances are, someone else already had an issue like yours, so using the forum search function can be very helpful and you don't really have to wait for someone to respond.

No idea about those slots before so thanks! seems to work now also thanks for the advice i did search this morning but with no luck D:
