The Sign Quest

Ok, I have a question about the sign quest.

I have comleted it and I wanted to open the portal.

When i clicked at the fountain, it gives option to throw the Lucifer's Lament or Ignore the light.

Must i throw the LL in the fountain in order to activate the portal?
I wanna make sure because if i throw the LL inside, will it be gone?
Is it one use only?

Please help me and thanks in advance
