It sounds like you need to install device drivers. Try looking around the computer for makes/models you can search google for.
Video will probably be Intel if it's built into the motherboard, or NVidia or ATI if it's on a separate card.
Sound is usually built into the motherboard, so I guess you should google around for Compaq 07E8h drivers as well.
