Title: ATTN: GM's. - Latency
Post by: Elements on January 09, 2008, 03:17:04 pm
Okay, I think I've pin-pointed WHY I'm lagging..

Basically, the server isn't receiving my packets I'm sending until 4-6 seconds after I've sent them.
However, I'm receiving packets from the server at a normal (Perhaps a bit under normal) Rate.

Meaning I can see other players moving, yet when I try to move, or perform any action, nothing will happen until a few seconds later.

I'm fairly sure that my action IS being performed when I send it, meaning that the server would be receiving the said packets, and my client wouldn't be receiving the animations.

But how can that be correct, when I can see other players moving, and performing actions whilst mine are delayed..?

Is there anyway around this..? Or is this a known issue..? Thanks.

EDIT: It's been really bad these past few days.. But it was perfectly fine on the Sixth (Morning, EST Time. 8ish?) However up until now, it's been unplayable, due to latency.

Happens randomly. Not a connectivity issue. Just restart your computer. Ro does that randomly with me

I tried that, but it's been like this for a week or more.. I've restarted, reconnected my modem, forwarded ports, everything ;~;

Are the GMs still doing item recoveries?

probably... I think it'll last another week or so...

This happened a week ago.. then it was okay for a few days.. Now it's worse than ever..

Does this have to do with Item Recov's? It's all hours of the day.. so it can't be that.. (Unless The GM's don't sleep, LOL.)

If a GM is doing an item recovery they have to check the Item DB and that causes LAG in game. I didn't know robots sleep?

lol... well... You know there are more than one GM... and if you're awake, GM's might be awake too (since you live pretty close to the server location right?)

Not all gms live near the server >.> But, sometimes we go on ticket binges, ie: Isuzu last night til 10am...

That's true /ok

But is this the reason I'm lagging..? Item recoveries I mean..? Only a few other players I've talked to are experiencing the lag when I do.. So it's not a server-wide thing.

Since you're receiving packets normally the problem is probably on your side.

First of all completely turn off your firewall and see if there's any improvement. If the lag lessened then you have something in your firewall blocking access. It might be something like firewall blocking the port or IP or something.

If that doesn't work then it might be your router make sure that your router firewall also allows RO to completey access the internet and make sure that all the ports being used by RO and Dyefire are open. I think RO's port was something like 4067 or so. You can use netstat (Start > Run > type in "netstat". There are also some programs to help you determine the ports TCPView (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb897437.aspx) for example will show you the ports all the programs are using.Find RO and Dyefire from the list and make sure both UDP and TCP ports are open.

I have one sentance to say..

FUCK YOU WINDOWS FIREWALL.

It somehow got turned on or something.. But the second I turned it off (NOT GOOD, BUT GOOD.) My lag problem stopped.. Or at least, for now anyways..

Whew.. Thank you all.. I hope it stays lag-free.. If not, you'll see me complaining :<

EDIT: I'm still a big laggy, no where near as bad as before (That could be due to item recov's..) But for now, I'm saying the lag has Lessened.. What else can I do :o?

EDIT2: I'm definately laggy, my messages all come at once, and even other people notice it.. So it's not just me noticing myself lagging..

Posting back again, it was just pure luck..

Turning off the firewall seemed to have very little, if at all, an effect on my RO.

Pretty much the same thing as I said above. Disable firewalls to see if the problem is there. And I mean to disable every single firewall completely,
Try opening the ports that RO are using.
Check your Internet traffic. Just Google a bit and you should find few programs to do this. If trhere's any bandwith eater check what program it is. If it doesn't seem to be important then turn it off
If you're using a shared connection check that your router is configured properly.

The only thing that I have open is RO and Firefox.. My computer/web isn't lagging.. And I've never had bad lag like this.. so I don't really see why my router would have changed.

I have no firewalls open, and it's the same.. Perhaps a bit less laggy, but still the exact same type of lag.

Since I face the same problem I tried what you said Aozora but when i checked the ports i found that i just have RO TCP port and there is no UDP port ....
So what to do now ?  /swt

Did you open the TCP port ._.

And it's always a good idea to check for viruses/Spyware/adware since they tend to hog bandwith.

I pinged anthem earlier, and I found this..

Code: [Select]
C:\Documents and Settings\Owner>ping -

Pinging - with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from -: bytes=32 time=83ms TTL=118
Reply from -: bytes=32 time=73ms TTL=118
Reply from -: bytes=32 time=33ms TTL=118
Reply from -: bytes=32 time=30ms TTL=118

Ping statistics for -:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 30ms, Maximum = 83ms, Average = 54ms

I had the correct IP, I just editted it out for the sake of privacy.

With 54 MS, I shouldn't be lagging.. It seems as-though the server receives what I'm doing, but it doesn't show me that I did it, until a few seconds later.

So basically, it's not the server, it's a problem with ME receiving packets from ANTHEM (Other servers are fine.)

Uhm, it's Anthem. Everyone lags, you just have to accept it.

Not the same type of lag I'm experiencing.

Besides, it's UNBEARABLE.. And it's been like this for like a week.. No one I've talked to so far had this problem for so long ;/ So it's not just Anthem lagging :<

Did you not see the MS Logs? I'm having no problem connecting to Anthem.

My friend pinged at 600, and they play fine, Yet I lag at 54, which is REALLY REALLY good.

My ISP isn't the problem, my internet is great, and I live close to the server to boot.

Do you always connect via Dyefire to the server? If so disable it and try again maybe.

I have just started experiencing a similar (if not exact) problem today, nothing has changed since yesterday as of filters firewalls, etc (yet I messed with them anyway to no avail) and today I am experiencing "Failure to connect to the server" and if I can connect at all, theres about a 5 sec gap between what happens in game, it's unplayable really.  I have heard the GM's pulling tickets (or something like that?) lags the server, i am hoping that is the problem because the rest of the web/ and other online games are playing fine for me.  As for Dyefire, even just using AnthemEXE alone makes no difference.

I live on the East coast (which is supposed to be same zone as the server?) , and it was running perfect until yesterday, aside from the little bit of lag that is usual during woe.  Bump for a solution  :-\..

Yes I do, but I have located the problem, and fixed it.

Are you on a shared connection? I recently found out my Sibling was using the other computer, and downloading TONS of things.. ALL Day and night, hence, laggy RO. (Not sure why my internet isn't laggy from it..)

After I unplugged that from the router, RO ran smoothly.

Perhaps this could be the issue for you, as well?

Definitely not an issue here, my laptop is the only one hooked up to the connection.  Even then, Anthem is the only connectivity problem, other games and another server I play on work just fine.  Im really hoping I can at least play tommarow, its still messed up as of now.  >:(
