Title: aRO is illegal?
Post by: Dandin on February 24, 2010, 09:51:55 am
I thought mirror servers were legal; and someone mentioned "making aRO legal." What exactly does that mean?
EDIT:: Whoops somehow this got into suggestions and random ideas. Sorry!

The server software it runs on is stolen from Gravity and using the sprites, client and even the name Ragnarok Online is illegal as well. So yeah... Making aRO legal would mean they would have to buy a license from Gravity, which will cost a lot of money.

I think people think that changing the server to eAthena will make the server legal.

There is no way to make it legal unless you buy a license /hmm Not that it matters...Gravity pretty much stopped caring, unless you make a lot of money, I think.

Why would Gravity sell updates, they'd lose money like that o_O;

ok that makes sense. My brother and his friends once ran a very small private RO server (like for 10 of us) where I did most of my playing when I was younger (before super novice and trans classes! Wow that was a long time ago!), and what he had claimed was that it is possible and legal to create mirror servers as long as you aren't making a profit? Probably he was wrong and I honestly trust your opinions and actual knowledge more, but...

No matter what you do it's still illegal as long as you use anything that Gravity made. Including their client, sprites, BGM's, server software, skill names, and bunch of other stuff. Every single eA server out there is illegal as well, though mostly with names and client, while aRO uses an actual stolen copy of the official server software. If you'd use eA, change skill/class/other names. Along wtih make customized sprites and maps using your own models then the whole thing would be legal.
But yeah, as DeePee said; Gravity stopped caring. There are thousands of pservers out there, and it'll take way too much resources for Gravity to bring down even few of the bigger ones. So they just ignore em and focus on updating their own servers with content that'll be better than on pservers.

It's illegal but it's like downloading music. It's just not possible to totally stop and even trying would require a HUGE amount of resources
