Title: AD FRAUD QUESTION!
Post by: Duplighost on November 20, 2008, 12:16:16 am
okay so heres my scenario... I only own one forum account which is this one... but since i have a very busy schedule with school and all, i vote on the sites at different IP adresses...so heres my first question, is it considered a fraud if i vote on different IP adresses but with the same account (after cooldown time has ended) ?
also another question,
is it considered a fraud if i have more than one forum account, but i vote with different forum accounts with different IP adresses? i wasnt sure of doing this because i dont want to get banned, since its only one person (me) thats recieving ads of different accounts....
thanks for your help guys, Greetings, -Aztex-

As long as you are waiting for the cool downs to end before voting again, then that's fine.

You aren't allowed to have more than one forum account, so regardless of whether it's fraud or not is irrelevant. You'd be breaking a rule just by virtue of having a 2nd account.

No problem. :)

I'm pretty sure that it's all right to vote through more than one IP address on one account, as long as you wait for the cool down. It WOULD be considered vote fraud, however, if you were to vote via different IP addresses on different forum accounts.
That is why you are only allowed to have one single forum account.

Semi off topic
Would it be considered Ad Fraud if I have my cousin vote for me IF HE IS IN A DIFFERENT STATE???
as in 500 mile apart??

If he is both on his own individual account and is at a different IP address, then he is free to vote and send the ads to you or keep them for himself as he sees fit.
If both of the above conditions are not met, then it would be fraud.

cool and yeah that would be met, My one problem is what if he comes visit me and logs on to the forums .... BUT DOES NOT VOTE OR DO ADS
would you still look at the IP addresses that Made the Votes or would that automatically cause problems

I'll let a GM field that one...

Regardless of different forum accounts or not if someone using your IP address votes and then you yourself vote it is considered fraud. If however your cousin votes and then you vote to later find out that your cousin had already voted then you can send in a support ticket with the info of what happened and you shouldn't receive a punishment (other than them revoking however many ads you got from the 'said' fraud votes).
I hope that makes sense...

Here's a question, IP Addresses can be Dynamic. What about those? That's the one thing I haven't figured out yet. If it's Dynamic and you use one, and then someone else uses a dynamic IP address and then he some day ends up w/ your IP Address how does that one work. I'm not an net guru, come talk to me when it's about robotics /no1

nearly imposible but it can hapen in MMos ..... odanary they look than first on the acount history and when it matched 1 time while both acounts was playd for month it say nothing ... only when the acounts share Adds or Items or are in the same guild or whatever the admins have to have an closser look what was done on the accounts. An Ip Adress can help but is only 1 checkpoint in Multi or Scamer hounting.

Yea, they dont just look at IPs. That is one of their highest 'defenses' against ad frauders but they will also look further into it if it seems out of place.

We see if a IP is dynamic and can still take proper actions regardless.
@ OP: To be perfectly save I would suggest for you / your IP to never come in contact ( log in wise ) with his account. Meaning when he comes to visit you he should not log into the forums. Is is not explicitly against the rules or disallowed, but if you are both voting and especially if he keeps forwarding the ads to you , it would look very much like fraud if his account would get online from your ip.

what happens if there's a false positive for ad fraud? i mean.. there wouldn't be any easy way to offer proof except just through the people involved saying "but it wasn't me, honest"
so... say his cousin visits him and logs on... then somehow this is flagged and for some reason, he was accused of fraud, got his accounts banned, etc... woudl there be any way for him to get it back?
in a more likely scenario, let's say 3-4 individuals play aRO, unknown to each other, at a university housing 16k+ people... It happens that there are 40-50 access points in the school, each with their own IP. One day, the wifi from one point is stronger than the other, and it just so happens that two people that play RO end up voting/doing ads on the same wifi access point... would they get banned?

That's my same dilemma right there. I used to vote at school, too, but I stopped voting there since the news about ad frauds came out. I'd rather not vote than risk my characters getting banned. :)
But a solution to this would be very much appreciated. :)

That's a good question. I can understand a ban if it's being done constantly and consistently, but what if it only happens once or twice? Or perhaps the question should be, how much money has to be involved before it becomes ad fraud? Or is it ad fraud even if a single penny is taken by more than one person from the same IP?
