Title: Why oh god why T_T
Post by: Fuerte on December 08, 2007, 12:52:15 pm
My screen burned out. The guy that came to fix it said that it was cuz I played my online games at something 85 setting. What did he mean? And when I get a new screen, what setting should I play aRO with? Because this new screen is comnig out of my own pocket ~_~

85 something? Setting of what? I worked at a Computer SHop before, so maybe I'll know.

Dunno but it had somethnig to do with the screen. My mom also heard him, and she thinks he said "watts". Maybe thats it? In any case, I want to prevent something like this from happening again

Well, if it's the electric current, it should have burned out sooner. But maybe it's the intensity of the screen's colors/lights. Maybe if you could lower it down, or keep the default settings of the screen.

It sounds like your screen refresh rate is too high. Try setting it to 60 hertz (average setting)

Either that or he was using an unsupported power cable.
That's the only thing I can think of considering when he said "85 something" /swt

Ask the technician again. Then, come back to us.

Yeah.
Hmm, Fuerte, did you have seperate refresh rates for games? If you boosted them on your video card's control panel, make sure you reset them to 60 AS SOON as your get the new monitor.
@Kris: What?

I meant to say: ask the Technician about what the "85 something" is. From there, he can ask him more questions, or ask us.

Yup sounds like a refresh rate to me too. Try not to use too high a setting or you'll fry your monitor, especially during gaming. A high refresh rate is good of course, but not to the extent where your monitor dies.
Like suggested above, the default is 60Hz, and it's what most people use.
1) Right click on Desktop, go to "Properties". 2) Hit on "Settings" tab. 3) Click on "Advanced". 4) Hit the "Monitor" tab.
You'll find it here.

I would do that except for one thing: Without a screen, I wouldn't know what the hell I'm doing. Till I get a screen, I'm helpless. And neither I nor my sis have his number, maybe my mom, but I can't call her at work. But tonight I might go and get a new screen. As for the 60Hz, I have no idea what that means, but maybe thats what it is. At any rate, I'll ask the repair dude and he'll help. I'll still check out what you guys mean, but I don't know much about computer mechanics.

Meh this happened to me before ;-; Refresh rate was the problem

Sorry for bumping an old topic, but I finally got a new monitor, and its refresh rate was already 60 Hertz. But I'm still afraid that the monitor may burn out some other way.
Edit: I asked the guy about what should I do, he said I need to make the settings for aRO 65 megahertz. I don't really know how to do that, I clicked on the Setup icon, but nothing there says anything about megahertz, just 640 X 480 X 16, uses 2D sound, 2 Speaker, the sound frequency is 22k, sound bits are 16 bit, the sound channel is 16, it checks on voodoo3 users, uses lightmap, enables fog, and both sprite and text details are at full. None of that said anything about megahertz =/.

What kind of screen do you have? CRT? LCD? Plasma?
Second: Do you have a video card driver installed, and what kind of video card do you have?
If you do have a video card, check the settings through the video card's utility menu/control panel. nVidia and ATI both have a program that allows for simple adjustment of your video settings. make sure your refresh rate is set to 60Hz or 70Hz. (1Hz = 1 cycle per second. Standard power in the US is 60Hz. Your computer probably runs somewhere around 2GHz. That's over 2 million cycles per second. a 60Hz refresh rate means your monitor paints a new screen 60 times a second. It's not as important with LCD and Plasma screens, but is very important on CRT monitors.)
85 something isn't very helpful at all in determining what your problem was. you need to make sure you get all the pertinent info you can.
On your new monitor, if it is a LCD or Plasma, turn the back light down as soon as you get it through the monitor's option menu. This setting is usually set way too high and will cause a shortened life span on your screen.

You know the buttons that right on your moniter and not your computer? It might be what he's refering to use to change your settings.

LCD I don't know what you mean, video what now? My refresh rate is at 60 hertz, for my monitor. He meant, change the settings for my game to 65 megahertz, thats what he told me to do, but I don't know where to go to change the settings, I clicked the setup icon, and nothing came up about megahertz. He said thats the only problem. I turned down the brightness setting for my LCD monitor down to 50.
@lary, I know =3

Nothing should ever be megahertz. the highest I've ever seen a monitor go is 100Hz. That's all it is. Just set it to 60, 65, or 70 Hz, and everything will be fine. On your video card settings, make sure it says the same thing for your refresh rate.

Fuerte, you don't need to change anything other than the monitor's or the video card's rates.

How do I access the video card's settings? I don't even know what a video card is >_>;;; Also, I'd like to be 100%(or 99.999%) sure, this monitor I just bought used cost 110$ o.o;;, and I don't wanna buy a 3rd one -__-

Rightclick your Desktop, Properties/Graphic Properties, look for something that says nVidia OR ATI, then look around in there for a "master" Refresh rate setting.

my refresh is running at 75 for 2 17" Lcd monitors.. Is that good or bad lol?

@ Flash - 60 is enough since the FPS of anything running well be locked at 60 FPS - 75 isnt too bad if you have any problmes just bring it down to 60

I found it, and it has the screen refresh rate of 60 hertz. But, what I also found was weird, was that there was this option under performance and quality settings, called global driver settings, and under that there were tons of game names (call of duty, halo, medal of honor, etc.). It didn't have RO T~T

Just look for a checkbox that says "Global overwrite" or something like that.

Right. These are your gamer profiles, which can load different settings for different games. If you wanted to, you could add RO, but AceJay has the right of it. you'll want to run global overwrite, or global settings.
