Title: =/ This has been bugging me and i want an answer...
Post by: Exentrix on September 22, 2008, 08:38:57 pm
=\ Once or twice in the past on forums on different sites i have mentioned AnthemRO and how it's free. People respond by telling me that it's illegal =\ Here, i'll quote one person, "Private RO servers are illegal and we do not condone piracy."
=\ Is AnthemRO really illegal? I don't care if it is, but it's been bugging me because i don't see why something like that would be illegal. I know you run on donations but what is the deal with this?

Technically it's illegal(?) but I'm pretty sure it's legal as long as it's non-profit. Private servers can't charge money for people to play. They can however, ask for donations, which is free will of the players to give and support the server.

ok, I understand it a little more. Thanks everyone. I was just questioning it because people kept ragging on it and how it's "illegal". :P Anyway, Thanks! :D

alltough its prolly the same, does that mean we're less ilegal than eathena servers ~nyo?^^
Well, from what I know, reverse engineering without consent/permission is serious business.

Well, Aegis is stolen software that is officially used. AFAIK the only way to obtain it is by hacking into the official RO servers. So yes, Aegis is illegal.
eAthena is an opensource emulator, which is...well, illegal as well. However, Gravity did sue eAthena, but they lost the case.

You know, I keep hearing about that, but I have never seen solid proof of it. I have seen a litigation between 2 different parties, which was not eAthena. However, eAthena users keep claiming that i twas that exact lawsuit which gave eAthena the "rights to run" legally.
I don't quite buy it though :/ (The lawsuit was about them owing money to another party >_> )

Well, the fact that eAthena is still running at least means Gravity did not win the case. It would have probably been shut down if they did.
But yeah, even if eAthena did win the case, it's still illegal. Same goes for Aegis. As long as others run RO servers without paying Gravity for it, it's considered illegal IMO. Gravity does not care anymore though, so it seems.

Then what happened in Europe? I heard euRO (Gravity's Europe RO branch) banhammered all the European based private servers a while ago.
I, too, would like more info about the court battle between Gravity and eAthena users.
