I don't know how to use wine .___. care to teach me? First of all, Sean tried to explain which wine to download, but I failed horribly. I really need step by step tips in downloading wine, installing it, running Ragnorak, and etc. I am a total Linux nub. ;(

Which distribution are you using? Some are easier to set up than others.

If you have yum set up, I think you can just go to a console and type in:
cd /Your/RO/folder wine ExeNameGoesHere.exe If not, just use those same commands to run your installer.
Just a side note: make sure you have video drivers installed. RO might not start without them.

Hiya, I'm reviving this topic, because I wasn't sure I ought to make my own, considering this one isn't too old, and it's about the same thing.
I'm running Ubuntu Linux, Hardy Heron.
I've been using Wine to try to run RO and have been having issues. I made sure my drivers are up to date, and I thought I had Wine configured properly, but I still either get that "Cannot init d3d or grf file has a problem" or I get a sound error of some sort. I'm not sure what else I can do.
Any suggestions from someone familiar with using Wine to run RO?

Do you have the latest version of Wine installed? They released 1.0 close to a week ago? And I would try messing with the setup.exe in your RO folder.
I'm using Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron as well, under amd64. I installed wine 1.0, but I couldn't get the sound to work, that and I'm too lazy to make it work. But basically I changed my resolution in setup.exe and disabled the sound (under the 2d sound drop down) in setup.exe and I was able to log in RO with ubuntu. And since I can't use the patcher either, I had run vista to run the patcher, and just play in Ubuntu.

I have the newest version of Wine. I just updated today. In addition I downloaded the mfc42.dll and the msvcp60.dll. After doing that, I was able to run the patcher, and the game started without giving me the graphical error, however, instead of loading the game, it just goes to a blank white screen. I can see the RO cursor, but that's it, and it lags my system up considerably, like the program is having some sort of problem.

Have you tried just running anthem.exe instead of the patcher?

Are you dual booting with Ubuntu? Or did you install RO within Linux?

If you're not already I would suggest running the game through the terminal and watching the errors. I am running Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron with wine 1.1.0 and I'm only having sound issues. At least for me the game runs much more smoothly on Linux than on windows.
check your wine version with: wine --version
