Title: Please clean your Forum PMs
Post by: Linus on September 29, 2014, 03:57:12 pm
We are trying to finalize the migration to the new host, but need to do a little house cleaning before we complete the move. It appears that the majority of the forum members (myself included) never delete their forum PMs and over time... these messages have consumed a massive amount of space which is making it difficult to transfer to the new host.

I would like to ask for everyone's help, if you have any messages (inbox, sent, archived, etc) that you can live without, please delete them. If there are messages that you're only keeping for one or two small pieces of information, please write down what you need and delete the rest.

I am going to clean the inboxes for the inactive forum accounts over the last x number of years to try and reduce the size and make our database easier to import to the new host. I will make a backup beforehand so I can restore any messages that may have been deleted accidentally. However I only plan to remove messages sent to those inactive players, not from. So any messages you may have from previous players shouldn't be affected. If you notice any messages you may have needed are no longer there, please reply to this thread. Do not PM me! I'm trying to clean inboxes, the last thing I need is mine being flooded.

But you're not doing Linus a favor. I already did him a favor the other day on the new TeamSpeak. So I'm an exception  ::)

But I was supposed to delete the unwanted PMs, end up reading them all 34 pages instead of deleting it..................................

SMF goes per SQL, so why don't you just truncate the private messages table?

This will not only greatly benefit the staff to speed up the migration, but also saves forum users that need to go through 100+ pages of PMs lot of time. Worth considering.

I had assumed Linus knew this already. My guess was he made the post so that active players would help to free up a little bit more space and that he'd be truncating messages from inactive users.

A bunch of them are convos from guild mates that include login info, addresses, and such. Id gladly purge them all, I just don't know exactly where they exist.

Nyx was fiddling with it earlier to try to get it to stop showing the old Valkyrie Helm sprite in place of certain headgear sprites.  I'll let her know.

Follow-up:  Nyx updated the CP sprites, so everything should work right now.  I hope that helps!  If you run into any further errors, try to narrow it down to a specific headgear so Nyx can check its sprite.  Thanks for the heads up on this one.
