Champion. Less pots wasted. With SG you need to tank MVP, with champ you can Asura and snap or fly wing away= repeat.

is it ever situational?

Very situational. Party wise a SG >>>>>>> Champ a million times over. The only requirement is a good party who knows what they are doing and how to support a SG properly. If you set it up properly a SG will always outdamage a champ and doesn't require gospel to achieve insane damage. (Access to most elements including one of the best for MVPs, ghost.) Also very cheap since it is a party and usually those are pretty cost effective. Anything you can't heat you can swap to a DDD book and kick to death.
As for solo wise it depends. If you can tank it SG is a great choice if you throw in kaahi. Otherwise pots would cost too much to tank. (you can also add in kaahi to the party type to make it even more easy mode.) Champ if you don't want to party and SG if you can find people to go with. A HP can be enough for most small time MVPs and big MVPs you can get by with just a HP and a devo. Try to avoid things with LP if you go SG though.

And it's so fucking easy to find party at our current player rate. Champ>>>>>SG. If you disagree, good luck finding decent party for you Star Gladiator needs.
The Mystic= try to log on to server, and try to find a party, before suggesting bullshit..

I have done it countless times. The problem is more about players who know what to do rather than finding the players. I have partied in this setup before but the problem was these kinds of methods have been so long extinct here no one knows or is used to doing it anymore.

SG can be fabulous in ET if the party is good enough to support it. Just don't try to tank ifrit since he has LP and hurts way too much. You can easily tank all the others with SW's though, and tank berz as well if your prof can remove LP's for you. Or if there is no prof you can tank him while DPSing him with crits using a DDT/DDD book. But I highly recommend a prof for dispelling valk's assumptio as well as other things to dispell. (guardians, kasa's etc etc) but how you kill them will depend on your party. You may really want to get a serious party to practice with a few times then take it into ET. You can assist in ifrit's room by staying alive and doing emergency ress incase they wipe. SG also works well in the thorn room, removing thorns by heat helps if you don't have a prof and are forced to clear some thorns for your team. FSK makes staying on a thorn easier than most melee classes. (push back due to arrow shower) After that usually gtb+pneuma should keep you on the thorn you want to kill.
Hopefully it won't turn out for you the way it did for me.
