Title: Lagging out during Mob issue
Post by: Papercut the Madhatter on October 29, 2011, 08:24:06 pm
Whenever I attack more then a few monsters with a Baphomet card, I freeze, then D/c.
I can cast Lightning Jolt on a bunch of monsters without even lagging, but when I try to mob more then three, I d/c.

Any answers as to why?

My guess is that lightning jolt doesn't cause you problems since you have far less lightning jolts then auto-swings.  In general, doing AoE damage causes your computer to have to do more processing of numbers so the more hits at once and the faster those hits come, the more work your computer does.  It sounds like your computers is fast enough to handle the AoE of lighting jolt but not fast enough to handle baphomet splash.  Something you can try is to not buy stones so you don't do the AoE to see if that gives you enough extra computer cycles to handle a baphomet splash.

I can help you guess.

It's probably not your computer hardware cause this game is ancient and I can play it on 10 year old computers.
It could be that you're running way too many background programs. Hhave you checked? ctrl-alt-del and see how many programs are running when you've just started your computer. As a reference mine has windows XP and I have 25 processes running at start (this includes a 3rd party firewall).

Win 7 probably has more but just check so there's not alot of junk running that doesn't need to be there.

Do you have a solid internet connection? Could be that when there's too much info your connection can't handle it. Although I have played this on dialup way back in the early 2000.

Do you DC when other people mob or just when you mob?.

Have you tried redownloading the full client and done a fresh reinstall? Something could be corrupt in your current install.

Have you defragged your harddrive?

Do you have enough free Virtual RAM or even actual RAM?

Is your video card drivers up to date? There could be a bugfix out for your card.

Direct X up to date?

Ethernetport working properly? Check the drivers for your ethernet card as well maybe?!

Both. Then I'm alone. And if someone mobs beside me.

uhm.. that's a  program not a process. Trust me there's always more than 1 process running (and yeah I realise processes are technically programs too)
Check the other tab!

Wireless is always a bad idea when gaming since you get worse response times (lag) and more interference (lag/dc).
If it's the same when you have a cable then it could still be your isp.
Do you have problems when downloading stuff?

Something could have gone wrong when you downloaded the client or with one of the patches. You might wanna try redownloading it and reinstalling.

is it just the lightning effect that makes you DC? I mean have you tested this. will priests casting Magnus DC you? grimtooth? players smackinga mob with bapho carded regular weapons?

have you tried lowering effects? turning off fog, lightning map, using simple effects etc?! there's a number of settings in game and also in the setup.

Tried running one of those graphics performance programs that test your card to the limit? they'll use all sorts of effects
if the programs crash on you there might be something wrong with your graphics card (do other 3D games work flawlessly for you?)

Do you lag only when attacking the mob, or when the mob is chasing you. Also do you lag when someone else enters the screen?

how old is your wireless access point since i'm not u to date on wireless N but i know previous version could get interference from wireless phones and microwaves. also the distance you are from the point can have an effect.
