At the request of one of the members, I am making a new troubleshooting thread for Ubuntu.

I was working on multiple projects one day and Windows crashed on me.  I couldn't reinstall it b/c my license agreement expired (I installed XP on more than 3 systems).  My laptop came with XP when I got it, so the copy of it was not mine.

I was looking at my Ubuntu CD sitting on a shelf (untouched) and decided to say, screw it, I'm done with Windows crashes, reformats, loss of data, viruses, and not having a little more security.

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and then upgraded it (for FREE) to vs 11.04

I love it.  It took some getting used to, but I've already got my old snes emulations working, along with other software I need for my personal projects.  The only thing left was AnimusRO.

I'm not switching back to Windows for one game, so please don't reply, switch operating systems.  Plus it's rude. =D

There is a way to run ARO on Ubuntu.  Using an application called WINE, which is a windows emulation program.

So far I have everything working up to a point.

[Instalation Troubleshooting]

I first installed WINE and WineTricks

Second I installed Animus RO C:/games/animus  (successfull)

Third I browsed the Animus Folder and right clicked on the RO Patcher (successfull)

Fourth I right clicked on the 'animuspatcher.exe' in the same folder, and opened it with wine/windows loader (after a few attempts it successfully patched)

I then exited the patcher.

Fifth: I right-clicked on the Setup.exe file and tried to load it via the same method.  (crash)  Reasons: to ensure the resolution was the same as the configuration of Wine in the graphics tab at 800x 600

I could not open Setup.exe in wine.  I got an error:

[Program Error]

The program Setup.exe has encountered a serious problem and needs to close.  We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I've searched the forums in both AnimusRO and Ubuntu, and Wine's website.
I am fairly new at using the Ubuntu OS.  Aside from Animus, I'm doing ok with it.

I didn't download anyting else with Wine or any other applications. 

Any insight to this 'program error' would be greatly appreciated.

Oh, I'm sorry!  When I read "Feel free to ask & answer any questions here , under this catagory, I was foolish enough to think, that it would be OK to ask this question.  Silly silly me.

hi, buntu user here...

First time i installed ro on buntu i was very much distressed too since no available manual provided in internet, so i work my own and got me good result, here's what i do:
- uninstalling my wine which i got from Ubuntu Software Centre and install Wine from their own website http://www.winehq.org/download/ubuntu
- when you finished installing Wine, load the animusro from terminal to know what really happen, from here I find out .dll file that needed by the program.
- find in internet every ,dll program needed, download them all to your Wine folder, i was opening my c: folder which is accesed through Wine aplication.
- Good Luck

btw i think im using the Wine beta version

I'm attempting your suggestion, but could use some more information.

Here's what I've attempted so far:

Then I downloaded ARO on a windows xp computer and installed/patched it, then put the AnimusRO folder in the shared files on my network, and copy/pasted the folder to my Ubuntu laptop in Home/user directory, and tried to run 'Setup.exe' to change the settings.  Again the setup wouldn't load.  The virtual desktop would pop up and give me the error listed above and I'd have to close it.
3)  I then decided to copy/paste the AnimusRO folder from my home/user directory, directly into wine./C: folder and try launching setup from there.  And again I get the same error.

4) this was my result
X Error of failed request:  BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter)
  Major opcode of failed request:  54 (X_FreePixmap)
  Resource id in failed request:  0x5000047
  Serial number of failed request:  357
  Current serial number in output stream:  358


Again, all help is appreciated =P

Not sure if this will help but here i go:

What you need to do is either install Animus on the windows partition (through windows) or install it onto a usb using another computer. Then you just follow the video and it should work.

That's the exact video I was trying to follow =P

I was able to patch fine, but when i tried to load up setup or animus.exe I kept getting the error mentioned above in the first post.

Here are some other commands I've tried to get it working, and here are some of the results in terminal

matthew@latitude:~$ glxgears
The program 'glxgears' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install mesa-utils
matthew@latitude:~$ apt-get install mesa-utils
E: Could not open lock file /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (13: Permission denied)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), are you root?

so I went into ubuntu software updater and installing it manually

Ubuntu Software Center: search glxgears

1 app available

"Miscelaneous Mesa GL utilities"
Installed:

Terminal:

matthew@latitude:~$ glxgears
Segmentation fault

^ result

and also:

Assuming that the error had something to do with the video card drivers I went to the ubuntu software center and searched for Direct X
and downloaded "Cg Toolkit - GPU Shader Autoring Language

I went to my terminal again and ran wine setup.exe

and got a new error message

X Error of failed request:  BadPixmap (invalid Pixmap parameter)
  Major opcode of failed request:  54 (X_FreePixmap)
  Resource id in failed request:  0x5000047
  Serial number of failed request:  357
  Current serial number in output stream:  358

This is what happens when i try to run wine setup.exe in terminal

Try using the proprietary nvidia drivers instead of the open source nouveau ones.

Also, use the edit button instead of making consecutive posts. It helps to keep these threads a little more organized.

Question for you, how did you upgrade to 11.04? Via new CD/DVD or did you use the upgrade manager? I've read that if you use the upgrade manager it can cause issues with the install, not sure if that's the problem but you never know.

I used the upgrade manager.  Is there a way to undo the upgrade without reinstalling the OS?

This has definitely helped me progress this troubleshooting.  That link was extremely helpfull!

After following all the steps that allowed me to from that page, I was finally able to run the Setup.exe in wine successfully.

When I tried to run the game "Animus.exe" I got this error:

Error:
Cannot init d3d OR grf file has problem
[close]

I ran regedit through wine, and checked user/software/wine and my Direct3D folder was missing, instead I have : a "X11 Driver" folder. I uninstalled/reinstalled wine, and have the same thing.
I typed glxgears in terminal, and happy to say that I got the window with the gears spinning, which means I have the correct software for my Nvidia card.

I will diligently research this issue, but any more input would be appreciated.

I feel that I am very close to resolving the issue, and one step closer to being able to play ARO on a Ubuntu system ^_^ 

Thank you so much you all for helping me troubleshoot this new puzzle of mine.

ps. As for not editing existing posts, I want to keep a record of all the steps I've done on the forums to help others who may be experiencing the same problems I've encountered. 

Also It's something I may be able to fall back on should I need to troubleshoot this issue again. ie. reformating hard drive again, helping friends install the game on Ubuntu etc etc.

Looked around a bit quickly and it seems that it might be an issue with the drivers not selected in the RO setup file so make sure those are the right ones. Messing around with some of the setup settings might help too. Google also says that the files may not be patched so running the patcher could fix it ???

edit: direct x might be corrupted too ;_;

Direct X cannot be used in Linux.  OpenGL is the equivalent. 

Sadly, I had made a mistake during the process of troubleshooting to get ARO on the Ubuntu Operating System.

I ended up undoing something that screwed up my oldschool snes emulations.  I teched for 12 hours straight and lost it xD.

I am temporarily giving troubleshooting with Linux a break.  I am working with an inferior computer, which I hypothesis, is the problem.  I'm running on an old Dell latitude C480 laptop.  Some of the tutorials, and instructions that were given in the Ubuntu forums were not all entirely successful themselves.  I believe I need to upgrade the machine itself before I continue my trek with Ubuntu.

I will resurrect this thread once I get a new Machine to test it on.

I think you can run directx with wine, you just have to enable it in the config. But sorry to hear that things got even worse, hopefully upgrading will help.

The situation evolved since the last post, the power cord to the dell latitude laptop broke again.  Someone thought it would be funny to come up behind me and tickle me, and the laptop fell on the floor, severing my power cord.  This is the second time my power cord to the laptop broke.  I personally think that Dell designed them fragile to begin with to screw you.  For those of you playing the home game, I'm using (used >_>) a Dell Latitude C480.  Avoid! It was outdated anyway.  This particular topic probably should have been put in the 'ranter's section' but I'll just chalk it up to as another reason aka set-back, as to why I can't continue troubleshooting the issue.   

I'll just replace it when I can and try again.
